Year 1

Welcome to Year 1 2023-2024!

I am so excited to have you all back at school for a new year! I know you are going to make an amazing Year 1 class. I am looking forward to seeing you grow and develop this year. We have made lots of exciting changes to the classroom so that there are opportunities for you to learn through play in our continuous provision as we build up our stamina to more formal lessons later in the year to get you ready for year 2. There will be lots of teachers supporting you with your learning this year.

Mrs Carlisle will be teaching you Art and DT

Mr Forbes Jones will be teaching you computing

Mrs Ridings will be teaching you PE

OLOL Music company will begin to teach Music this year and this will take place on a Thursday.

Please ensure that your PE kit is in for a Wednesday with outdoor PE kit in school with a pair of trainers as we will be using the field for PE lessons too.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and needs to be back in for the following Wednesday and this will include Maths, Reading and Spellings each week. Spelling tests will be on a Wednesday.

As always, if there are any issues, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Turner

Children in Key Stage 1 will bring home a new reading book each week on a Friday. This book will be matched to their individual current phonics knowledge and they will have had the opportunity to read this book at least 3 times in school with an adult before bringing this home. The children should be able to read this book at a 95% fluency rate, which means for the majority of words there will be no overt segmenting and blending. Please listen to your child read their phonics reading book at home at least 3 times a week and write in their home school diary for the teaching staff where possible. This helps us to ensure that should any difficulties arise with fluency in certain books we can understand whether it is due to not being exposed to the text or a difficultly with retaining and blending new graphemes.

Your child will also bring home a list of weekly spellings linked to the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised phonics scheme taught in school. These spellings are linked to the graphemes or spelling rule the children have covered during the week in class. If you could please practice these spellings with your child and they will be tested on these the following Wednesday in school.

People Who Help Us

Our topic for this term is called People who help us! We will be learning about where we live and what the four seasons are. We will be using globes and maps to help us locate the United Kingdom and we will learn that we live in England. We will also be building on our learning from Reception about people who help us. We will be learning about Florence Nightingale and the wonderful changes she made to nursing.

Moon Zoom

Moon Zoom is a very exciting topic! We will be continuing our work on where we live and we will be able to recognise the four countries in the United Kingdom and where we live. We will extend this to learn that we live in Europe. We will also be learning about the history of flight and how this has evolved over time so that we can travel and explore.
