Safeguarding and Prevent Strategy

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is everyone’s responsibility. Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families has a role to play.

In order to fulfil this responsibility effectively, all at St Joseph’s ensure the approach is child-centred. This means that St Joseph’s consider, at all times, what is in the best interests of the child.

St Joseph’s recognises that no single practitioner can have a full picture of a child’s needs and circumstances. If children and families are to receive the right help at the right time, everyone who comes into contact with them has a role to play in identifying concerns, sharing information and taking prompt action.

The purpose of safeguarding children is to:

  • Protect them from abuse, maltreatment and exploitation.
  • Prevent anything from harming their health or development.
  • Ensure they can grow up under safe and effective care.
  • Take action to ensure they have the best outcomes in life.

As part of our Safeguarding offer, St Joseph’s and Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Multi Academy Trust (OLoL CAMT) have a team of people who lead on safeguarding our students, they are our Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSLs).

All staff have undergone basic safeguarding training and the following staff members hold specific roles and responsibilities for child protection in school and Trust

What is the Prevent Strategy?

As part of St Joseph’s ongoing safeguarding and child protection duties we are fully behind the government’s Prevent Strategy.

From 1 July 2015, all schools are subject to a duty under section 26 of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015, in the exercise of their functions, to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”. This duty is known as the Prevent Duty for Schools.

At St Joseph’s, we build pupils’ resilience to radicalisation by promoting British values across the curriculum, linking these to our school mission and virtues.

The statutory guidance refers to the importance of Prevent awareness training to equip staff to identify children at risk of being drawn into terrorism and to challenge extremist ideas. All our staff have completed this training, understand what Prevent is about and how to deal with any issues they may see inside or outside school.
